Custom Home on Forest Lane
South of Bend, Oregon
When our clients decided to build their dream home on the banks of the Big Deschutes, they donated the site’s original structure to the volunteer fire department and, with our guidance, began to construct a meticulously thought-out plan on the footprint of the original cabin. Their vision, cultivated for many years as they learned the seasonal nuances of the site and studied the ineffable effects of proportion and scale, hinged on the notion that a space, when well-planned, does not need to be so big. This thinking translated into a home that recedes into its surroundings rather than dominating them. It also allowed funds customarily spent on raw square footage to be reallocated into intricate finish details that flow seamlessly from one room to the next. The resulting new home has a serene, comfortable feeling that manages to transcend aesthetics, despite its timeless beauty; much like the natural splendor all around it.
